President [Donald Trump](http://time.com/4672974/donald-trump-white-house-chaos/)‘s speech at the [Conservative Political Action Conference](http://time.com/4681503/donald-trump-cpac-conservatives-alt-right/) quickly turned into a media-bashing session as he took aim at “[fake news](http://fortune.com/2017/02/13/apple-ceo-tim-cook-fake-news-killing-minds/)” and anonymous sources, before he turned to delivering a version of his usual stump speech.

“A few days ago I called the fake news the enemy of the people, and they are, they are the enemy of the people,” Trump said Friday morning as part of a 15-minute tirade against the press. “Because they have no sources, they just make them up when there are none.”

The President said early in his speech that he doesn’t view honest journalism as his enemy. “I’m not against the media, I’m not against the press, I don’t mind bad stories if I deserve them,” he said. “And I tell you I love good stories, but I don’t get too may of them. But I am only against the fake news media or press.”

But Trump proceeded to say that the press should not be allowed to use anonymous sources in their coverage of him. “Let their name be put out there,” he said. “‘Donald Trump is a horrible human being.’ Let them say it to my face. … You will see stories dry up like you’ve never seen before.”

And he criticized journalists invoking the First Amendment as a protection for their work. “They say we can’t criticize their false stories because of the First Amendment. They always bring up the First Amendment,” Trump said in an exaggerated mocking voice, to laughter from the crowd. “I love the First Amendment, who uses it more than I do?”

After Trump’s apparently off-teleprompter remarks about the press, he delivered one of his standard speeches, including references to his campaign and the Democratic primary. He referenced key Administration policies, including cracking down on immigration and repealing the Affordable Care Act. “We’re going to repeal and replace Obamacare,” Trump said. “From a purely political standpoint, the single best thing we can do is nothing. Let it implode completely… The Democrats will come to us and beg for help, and it’s their problem. But it’s not the right thing to do for the American people.”

Trump has taken the stage at CPAC before, and he credited his past appearances at the event for inspiring his political career. In 2011, he mused onstage about running for President. “\[It was my\] first major political speech, and I loved it,” Trump said Friday. “I loved the people, I loved the commotion, and then they did these polls where I went through the roof and I wasn’t even running… But it gave me an idea.” (In reality, Trump [lost the CPAC straw poll](http://time.com/4681865/cpac-donald-trump-straw-poll/?xid=homepage) each year for the past six years.)

Trump was scheduled to speak in 2016 during his presidential run, but he [dropped out](http://time.com/4248043/donald-trump-controversial-cpac-speech-cancel/?iid=sr-link3) to hold a campaign rally instead. “I would have come last year but I was worried that I would be, at that time, too controversial,” Trump said Friday.

## Transcript

A few days ago, I called the fake news the enemy of the people because they have no sources. They just make them up. They shouldn't be allowed To use sources unless they use somebody's name. Let their name be put out there. Let their name be put out there. A source said Donald Trump Why do you deny that? A lot of people do not think it was an authentic certificate. How can you say that if this But many people do not think it was authentic. His mother was not in the hospital. [ MUSIC ]. A lot of people are saying that, a lot of people are saying. that bad things are happening out there. And these are areas that are profiting up a facade.

Right and I'm hearing that and I hear they're hitting both but I'm hearing that. A lot of people said I won and I'm very happy about it. There are many people that think maybe he doesn't want to get it. He doesn't want to see what's really happened. [ MUSIC ] A spirit that many people have told me They've never seen before. Well no, I was told, I was given that information. I don't know, I was just given. I have a friend. He's a very, very substantial guy. He loves the City of Lights. He loves Paris. For years, every year during the summer, he would go to Paris. It was automatic with his wife and his family.

Hadn't seen him in a while. And I said, Jim, let me ask you a question. How's Paris doing? Paris, I don't go there anymore. Paris is no longer Paris.
