Despite her husband’s “America First” speech at his inauguration on January 20, Melania Trump was spotted in mostly European designers recently.
Stepping off Air Force One alongside President Trump last Friday, the First Lady wore a red Givenchy cape dress. On Saturday, at the Red Cross ball, she chose a bright pink Dior gown. The New York Times‘ fashion writer Vanessa Friedman points out that both luxury brands are connected to LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, and its CEO, Bernard Arnault, visited Trump Tower after the election.
But in regards to Mrs. Trump’s decision to forgo American designs, the First Lady’s senior adviser Stephanie Winston Wolkoff provided the following statement to the Times: “Mrs. Trump is a proud and longtime supporter of American fashion. She appreciates fashion as art. As a former model, she has always been a patron of the world’s most distinguished designers both here and abroad. Mrs. Trump buys from an international mix of brands because that is what reflects her uniquely American life experience and style. She is more excited than ever to make a platform for American designers as she did on one of the most important weeks in history, the Inauguration, showcasing the extraordinary talents of American designers.”
It should be noted, however, that Mrs. Trump did wear clothes from The Row and Derek Lam — both American brands — at the Mar-a-Lago Super Bowl party.
