Feminist icon, [Gloria Steinem](http://content.time.com/time/video/player/0,32068,1094264687001%5F2086963,00.html), and signer and social activist, [Harry Belafonte](http://content.time.com/time/covers/0,16641,19590302,00.html), have both spent their lives advocating for social justice.

Now, as younger activists take the stage to protest the Trump administration, two of the [honorary co-chairs](https://www.womensmarch.com/honorary-cochairs/) of the [Women’s March on Washington](http://time.com/4636173/protests-before-womens-march-on-washington/) have this message to impart about where to go from here. In an exclusive video filmed at TIME for a story that appears in the magazine on stands now, Steinem and Belafonte discussed challenges [facing activists then](http://content.time.com/time/onedream/people/) and now.

“The Ku Klux Klan has been a forever presence in our midst. Racism and oppression has been an eternal experience,” says Belafonte, who was an active member of the [Civil Rights movement](http://time.com/3672274/civil-rights-movement-lesson/).

Steinem was optimistic about the future of activism.

“Sometimes I think, I just had to wait for some of my friends to be born,” she says with a laugh. “Because it is now a majority movement when, in our lives, it was not.”

[00:00] People keep asking me. I don't know about you but
[00:02] whom I'm gonna give my torch to? Right? And I always
[00:05] say to them I am not giving up my torch. Thank you
[00:08] very much. I ain't giving my torch. And I'm using it to
[00:11] light other people's torches because the whole idea
[00:14] that there's only one torch is the problem. No wonder
[00:18] we don't know where we're going. [ LAUGH ]
[00:19] Everybody has to have a torch. [ MUSIC ]
[00:27] This election brought up someone as president
[00:31] who represents to me the backlash that comes against
[00:36] social justice movements. And it is very very very
[00:40] dangerous. It's also true that when
[00:44] we elect a possible person, I'm sorry to say, we tend
[00:48] to go home and not be as active as we should. This
[00:53] is unprecedented in my life, and seeing that
[00:58] people are just, just not Going to take it. There was a
[01:02] rude awakening I think for White America that
[01:06] captured my interest because I've been threatened by
[01:10] a lot of political expressions in the last 90
[01:14] years. We've had a few presidents that have not been
[01:17] so kind. The Ku Klux Klan has been a
[01:22] forever presence in our midst. Racism and oppression
[01:27] has been an eternal experience. What I think
[01:31] Trump contributes is that he's taking away the
[01:35] ambivalence and the politics of the right wing. He
[01:40] doesn't like Hispanics. He doesn't like women. He
[01:43] doesn't like anything. Since the election, no one has
[01:47] said to us, post- racist or post- feminist, right? Right,
[01:53] exactly. And [ LAUGH ] so in some sense, if you've
[01:55] been doing this all your life, you And recognize how
[01:59] deep it is. That's the point. Right. It runs so deep.
[02:02] Right. My children are even amazed at
[02:07] things that they're hearing now. And I didn't realize
[02:11] how insulated they had become, that generation. For
[02:14] all that we'd struggles for in the Civil Rights movement,
[02:20] and the peace movement. In the women's movement.
[02:27] [ MUSIC ] I feel enormously
[02:33] lucky to be doing What I'm doing and
[02:38] I feel such faith in the younger activists I see.
[02:42] You know, sometimes I think I just had to wait for some
[02:45] of my friends to be born. Because it is
[02:49] now a majority movement, when in our lives it
[02:53] was not. Had I not been led
[02:58] to a place of activism, nothing in my life would have
[03:02] been worth its existence. I would never have been led
[03:06] to these destinations. Dr. Du Bois, Eleanor Roosevelt,
[03:11] all these people made my life absolutely The
[03:15] tarantella. It's a dance. It's a place to be so
[03:19] privileged to be in. What we get to do
[03:24] is profoundly interesting and communal and exciting
[03:28] and- Absolutely,
[03:37] absolutely. Right. Absolutely. [ MUSIC ]
