Meryl Streep used her [acceptance speech](http://time.com/4628072/golden-globes-2017-meryl-streep-donald-trump-speech/) for the Cecil B. DeMille Award during the [Golden Globes](http://time.com/4622027/golden-globes-2017-winners/?xid=homepage) to call out President-elect Donald Trump, urge the importance of press freedom and remind those in Hollywood of the responsibility of empathy.

Noting specifically a moment during the presidential election campaign during which Trump [mocked](http://time.com/4127857/donald-trump-disability/) a disabled reporter (something he [later denied](http://time.com/4128128/donald-trump-kovaleski-journalist-disability/)), Streep voiced her heartbreak at the use of cruelty.

“And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence.”
