Noting specifically a moment during the presidential election campaign during which Trump [mocked](http://time.com/4127857/donald-trump-disability/) a disabled reporter (something he [later denied](http://time.com/4128128/donald-trump-kovaleski-journalist-disability/)), Streep voiced her heartbreak at the use of cruelty. “And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she said. “Disrespect invites disrespect.
