On Dec. 14, 1911, humans reached the South Pole for the first time, and on Wednesday Google commemorated the 105th anniversary of that milestone with a new Doodle.
Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen led a team of 19 people and almost 100 Greenland sled dogs to trudge through the sweeping Antarctic terrain to reach the “the bottom of the world.” Google notes that the Norwegian explorers’ use of sled dogs and skis to journey across the treacherous landscape “were key to the team’s success,” as was their sense of fun (and meticulous planning.)
Google describes the Doodle as depicting “the crew at the finish line, taking a moment to bask in the glory while the Antarctic wind whips outside their tent.” Amundsen, known as “the last of the Vikings,” and his team reached the South Pole 33 days before a rival British team led by navy captain Robert Scott.
