A cut in oil production, by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. The drop to 32.5 million barrels a day agreed on by 14 countries is the first since 2008 and comes after a two-year glut and a long stretch of stagnant prices. In the hours after the Nov. 30 deal, oil prices leaped more than 8% to a five-week high.

The largest die-off of corals ever recorded on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, by scientists on Nov. 29. More than two-thirds of corals in the reef’s northern region have been lost in the past nine months because of bleaching caused by warmer water.

Cuban baseball player Yoenis Céspedes, by the New York Mets, in a four-year deal said to be worth $110 million. This would make it the highest annual salary for an outfielder in the history of the sport.

CELEBRATED

The 117th birthday of Emma Morano, the world’s oldest living person, on Nov. 29. The Italian supercentenarian, who has been single since kicking her husband out in 1938, credits her longevity to eating two raw eggs a day. She is believed to be the last person alive born in the 19th century.

DIED

Grant Tinker, NBC’s former chairman and CEO, 90, at his California home on Nov. 28. Known for telling employees to “first be best and then be first,” Tinker is credited with revitalizing the network with shows like Cheers, The Cosby Show and Family Ties. He was married to actor Mary Tyler Moore for 19 years.
