GM Delays Car Sales Numbers As Competitors Surge

While other car makers posted strong March sales numbers on schedule Tuesday morning, General Motors postponed its announcement, citing a computer glitch causing the delay.

Since February, the automaker has been forced to recall 2.6 million cars for various reasons, including a faulty ignition switch linked to 13 deaths. GM CEO Mary Barra is in Washington Tuesday to testify on the ignition switch recall before Congress.

Car sales overall in the United States have slumped in the first quarter of 2014 but are expected to have risen two percent in March. Sales at Ford climbed 3 percent while sales at Chrysler, buoyed by the success of its new Jeep Cherokee and Ram truck, rocketed up 13 percent.

GM said Tuesday the company hoped to post its own numbers by the end of the day due to “a computer systems issue that impacted dealer sales reporting,” Bloomberg Businessweek reports.
