Hollywood has [already given Hillary Clinton money](http://time.com/4434786/leonardo-dicaprio-clinton-fundraiser/), but now it hopes to deliver her votes.

A number of actors have taken to the campaign trail and the Internet to give the in-kind donation of their fame to get out the vote for the Democratic nominee. Actors who have appeared on politically-themed shows are especially popular in election season, in part because they seem more credible, like those TV doctors in the [ad campaign for Cigna](http://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/tv/former-tv-doctors-get-back-their-scrubs-cigna-commercial-n645986).

Members of the [cast of _The West Wing_,](http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/21/politics/west-wing-hillary-clinton-2016-election/) which went off the air in 2006, will campaign together in Ohio this weekend, while _Scandal_ stars [Bellamy Young and Tony Goldwyn](http://www.loudountimes.com/news/article/scandal%5Factress%5Fto%5Fstump%5Ffor%5Fclinton%5Fin%5Fashburn432) have hit the trail in Virginia. [Tim Daly](http://www.toledoblade.com/Politics/2016/09/13/Actor-Tim-Daly-stumps-for-Hillary-Clinton-in-Toledo.html), who plays the husband of a fictional Secretary of State on _Madam Secretary_, [one of Clinton’s favorite shows](http://time.com/3983064/hillary-clinton-favorite-tv-shows/), stumped in Ohio, as will [Sally Field](http://www.wfmj.com/story/33163300/chelsea-clinton-sally-field-to-stump-for-hillary-at-covelli), who [won an Oscar portraying a union organizer.](http://time.com/4250412/sally-field-hello-my-name-is-doris-interview/)

Not every actor has an obvious political tie-in, though. [Molly Ringwald](http://www.nh1.com/news/bratpack-actress-molly-ringwald-visiting-nh-to-stump-for-hillary-clinton/) stumped in New Hampshire, [Don Cheadle](http://denver.cbslocal.com/2016/09/06/don-cheadle-denver-hillary-clinton-colorado/) headed to Colorado, [John Lithgow](http://www.thepostathens.com/article/2016/09/lithgow-campaigns-hillary-athens) went to Ohio, [Sean Astin](http://www.sunjournal.com/news/2016/09/02/lord-rings-goonies-star-sean-astin-stump-maine-hillary-rodham-clinton/1987742) campaigned in Maine.

Others have contributed without leaving home. [Comedian Zach Galifianakis](http://time.com/4504137/hillary-clinton-between-two-ferns-zach-galifianakis/) hosted Clinton on his popular online show _Between Two Ferns_, while director Joss Whedon assembled a group of political avengers, including [Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. and perennial get-out-the-vote champion Scarlett Johansson](http://time.com/4502965/save-the-day-vote/) for a web video. (TV impresario [Shonda Rhimes](https://thinkprogress.org/shonda-rhimes-and-the-women-of-tgit-endorse-hillary-clinton-18d9c67d5af0#.h2tyjgtir) pulled together a similar all-star lineup for a video earlier this year.)

Republican nominee Donald Trump does not have a similar celebrity surrogate effort in place, though as [a former star of _The Apprentice_](http://time.com/4376384/donald-trump-the-apprentice/) and [various national commercials](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-XgMymBIY0) over the years, he is a media celebrity in his own right.

[Researchers at Washington State University](http://researchnews.wsu.edu/society/209.html) found that celebrity endorsements can help engage younger voters, who tend to vote at lower rates. They also help get local news coverage, which is a valuable way to keep the campaign in front of swing-state voters who might not be paying attention.
