John Legend Has a Question for People Protesting Colin Kaepernick’s National Anthem Protest

1 minute read

The Internet has been abuzz about Colin Kaepernick since the San Francisco 49ers quarterback refused to stand during the singing of the national anthem before a game Friday, with many posting on social media to denounce his actions.

But tensions increased Monday following Kaepernick’s announcement that he would continue to boycott the song because he chose not to “show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color,” according to an NFL interview.

In wake of these events, John Legend took to Twitter to pose a question to people criticizing the NFL player’s decision. “For those defending the current anthem, do you really truly love that song?,” he tweeted. “I don’t and I’m very good at singing it. Like, one of the best.”

The 37-year-old singer also weighed in with a suggestion to replace the “Star Spangled Banner” with “America the Beautiful,” linking out to an article about the current anthem’s racist history.
