A Britney Spears Biopic Is In the Works

1 minute read

If you think about it, it’s surprising that Britney Spears hasn’t received the biopic treatment yet. Lifetime will finally satisfy that vacancy for us, the Hollywood Reporter wrote on Wednesday. The TV movie will be called Britney and it’s set to come out next year.

Spears’ story is pretty much cemented in the pop-culture canon at this point, and Britney will faithfully try to chronicle all of it: the early days as a Mouseketeer from Louisiana; her staggering leap to superstardom in the late 1990s; the personal crises of the mid-2000s — luridly reported by the American tabloid press — and, the redemption. Natasha Bassett, the actress most recently seen in the Coen brothers’ Hollywood period piece Hail, Caesar!, will play Spears.

Of course, history is still being written: Spears is still making music, with her ninth studio album Glory slated for release Friday.

This is not an authorized biography, however, and Spears, it seems, isn’t too happy about it.

“Britney Spears will not be contributing in any way, shape or form to the Lifetime biopic nor does it have her blessing,” her management told TIME in an email Thursday.
