5 Fantasy Sports Companies May Now Operate in New York

Five popular fantasy sports companies are now allowed to resume operations in New York, the state’s Gaming Commission announced Monday.

The New York State Gaming Commission, which regulates such online games, said it has issued temporary permits to DraftKings, FanDuel, Yahoo, FantasyDraft and Draft. The approvals come after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo legalized interactive fantasy sports in the state earlier this month.

“As the newly enacted law requires, the Commission regulates all aspects of interactive fantasy sports, including ensuring the operators put important consumer protections in place,” Commission Executive Director Robert Williams said in a statement. “While the Commission continues work on formal regulations for these games, these temporary permits get companies up and running in New York State while assuring resident players that safeguards are in place.”

The industry, which Cuomo said previously operated with “no supervision and no protections for players,” is expected to generate about $4 million in revenue to fund state education aid, officials said.
