The Gold Star family’s [speech at the Democratic National Convention](http://time.com/4433622/president-obama-donald-trump-khizr-ghazala-khan/) led to an intense rebuttal from Trump — a back-and-forth that has [hurt the GOP candidate’s polling numbers](http://time.com/4442887/trump-clinton-poll-abc-washington-post-khans/).
