A bullet that struck a media tent near the 2016 Rio Olympic’s equestrian event Saturday was intended for a police blimp, officials say.
Officials said Monday the bullet was fired from a favela, or shantytown, of Brazil, according to the Guardian. The shooter is believed to have been aiming at a security camera on the blimp.
“They were aiming at the blimp which carries cameras,” said the Rio Olympics’ organizing committee spokesman Mario Andrada. “The same source, from the ministry of defense, says the first findings showed that the bullet arrived with low energy and low speed.”
Officials initially thought the bullet was a stray from an army shooting range, given the equestrian venue’s location on a military base, according to Reuters. No one was hurt during the incident.
