Katy Perry is fighting back. The pop star released the music video for her latest single “Rise” on Thursday night.
The video’s teaser earlier this week showed the singer rocking a parachute and dangling off a cliff. Perry ends up stranded in the desert and facing a perilous fate, weathering a torrential downpour. She claws her way through the trials and takes flight in her parachute once more, literally rising.
Perry surprise-released the track, which pulls double duty as the theme song for the 2016 Olympics, in July and it’s her first release in two years. She also sang a version of the song at the Democratic National Convention, where she changed the lyrics to favor Hillary Clinton: “Don’t be surprised; she will still rise.”
“Now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” the Grammy nominee said in a statement. “I know that together we can rise above the fear — in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together.”
