August 5th is the 30th anniversary of Lionel Richie’s party classic “Dancing on the Ceiling” and to mark the momentous occasion, video editor Robert Jones created an awesome ’80s dance party video with all the characters from your favorite ’80s films busting a move to the tune.
The video features clips from the John Hughes oeuvre like Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as (wildly underrated) Better Off Dead, Howard the Duck, Twins, Dirty Dancing, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Hairspray (which is about to get the live musical treatment), Footloose, and even the dinner party scene from Beetlejuice.
Other clips include Mannequin with a young Kim Cattrall busting a move, Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party and Big, Bill Murray making the most of drill practice in Stripes, Robin Williams fist pumping in time in Good Morning Vietnam, and Prince letting loose in Purple Rain. It’s a super fun way to dance your way down movie memory lane, and maybe find a few films to add to your Netflix queue along the way.
By the way, the original music video for “Dancing on the Ceiling” is worth a gander for the impressively ’80s fashion, choreography, and ponytail mullet on the drummer.
