Hillary Clinton strode into the [history books](http://time.com/4429815/dnc-hillary-clinton-speech-theme/?xid=homepage) Thursday night, accepting the Democratic [nomination](http://time.com/4429397/dnc-hillary-clinton-speech/?xid=homepage) for President — a first for a woman. The landmark event marked the culmination of four decades of public service for the former Senator and Secretary of State, but also four days of a convention designed to humanize the candidate and showcase her strength, kindness and tenacity — attributes that have hardly dominated the, at-times biting, commentary surrounding Clinton.

“The truth is, through all these years of public service, the ‘service’ part has always come easier to me than the ‘public’ part,” Clinton said in her [acceptance speech](http://time.com/4429984/dnc-hillary-clinton-speech-video-transcript/?xid=homepage). But tonight, Clinton embraced the historic moment, beaming for the cameras, as captured by Ben Lowy in this photograph — one that could very well portray Clinton at her happiest.
