The former CIA director, who oversaw the operation that led to the death of Osama bin Laden, was dismissing Republican nominee Donald Trump’s views on foreign policy when the chanting broke out. Convention organizers shut off stage lights in the sections of the crowd where the chanting was taking place, making them less visible on television as Panetta struggled to maintain control. “The American dream that we’ve all been a part of has been defended in every generation by the brave men and women willing to fight and die for America. They are our greatest national treasure,” Panetta said, having to restart his sentence multiple times because of the chanting.
