It will have been three years since the last season of Sherlock when season four premieres on BBC in early 2017. But, finally, there’s a trailer for the new season. The action-packed footage starring Benedict Cumberbatch premiered at San Diego Comic-Con during the Sherlock panel on Sunday.
The trailer promises more of the villian Moriarty — or at least his apparent return. The character played by Andrew Scott seemingly died at the end of season two. The trailer also teased plenty of explosions, Sherlock shooting a gun and the genius even getting into a physical fight.
Co-creator and Mycroft actor Mark Gatiss has said that this will be the darkest season yet. And Benedict Cumberbatch, Holmes himself, said there will be a tragic turn. “It’s a genuine roller coaster,” he said at the panel. “There are quite a few tears.”
The panel, however, was rather jovial with panelists singing a belated happy birthday to Benedict Cumberbatch, who recently turned 40. And the creators weren’t afraid to mess with the fans a little bit. When a fan asked Cumberbatch what his first line in season four, episode one is, he replied, “Yes.”
