Leslie Jones stopped by Late Night on Thursday to address the conversation that arose from the racially-charged harassment targeted at her on Twitter surrounding the release of Ghostbusters.
The reboot infamously received a lot of “why them?” attention for its all-female cast, but as Meyers put it, Jones had a “very traumatic week.”
“The insults didn’t hurt me,” the Saturday Night Live star explained. “Unfortunately, I’m used to the insults, that’s unfortunate, what scared me was a gang of people jumping against you for such a sick cause.” Jones was still able to joke about her feelings toward Twitter. “It’s like, that’s my favorite restaurant, I love the food there. Three people just got shot in front of me. Y’all need to get some security!”
The comedian then explained that she met with Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and “got a whole bunch of accounts taken off of Twitter.” The incidents spurred questions about online harassment policies, and Jones went on to clarify her stance.
“Hate speech and freedom of speech; two different things.”
Best of all, Meyers showed video clips from fans and amateur ghostbusters who created touching videos to support Jones. The comedian only momentarily left Twitter due to the hostility, but the recapper of Game of Thrones and life itself is back. Thanking people for the choruses of appreciation, she said, “I’m not going nowhere.”
