Oklahoma City Thunder forward Enes Kanter told fans Wednesday that he has received death threats in the aftermath of a failed military coup in Turkey.
The 24-year-old Turkish native shared screenshots of the threats on Twitter. “Death threats continue to fall,” Kanter wrote, in Turkish, according to ESPN. “Prayer does not stand still.”
A faction of the military attempted to overthrow the government in Turkey, seeking to oust president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Kanter was previously critical of Erdogan following a March terrorist bombing in Turkey’s capital of Ankara, which left 37 dead. The basketball player was critical of blocked access to social media and limited media coverage in the country, according to ESPN.
