Last week, PEOPLE and Playbill revealed that some of Broadway’s biggest stars would come together to record a version of “What the World Needs Now is Love” to benefit the victims of the Orlando, Florida shooting at gay nightclub Pulse on June 12. Now, the track is available to purchase (all of the proceeds from the sale of the song will benefit the GLBT Community Center of Central Florida).
This version features vocals from stars like Sara Bareilles, Kristen Bell, Wayne Brody, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Gloria Estefan, Fran Drescher, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Whoopi Goldberg, Sean Hayes, Nathan Lane, Idina Menzel, Jessie Mueller, Audra McDonald, Carole King, Sarah Jessica Parker, Mathew Broderick, Rosie Perez, Bernadette Peters, and more.
Organized by SiriusXM Radio host Seth Rudetsky and his husband, producer James Wesley, the song was recorded in Avatar Studios in New York. “The Broadway community was so terribly shaken and devastated by the horrific tragedy in Orlando,” Rudetsky told PEOPLE. “Everyone wanted to do something as quickly as possible that would truly make a difference.”
See a clip of the stars recording the track (and the hear the whole song in the video too).
