Mexican soccer player Alan Pulido, kidnapped Sunday in the country’s northern state of Tamaulipas, was rescued after several hours in captivity, officials said early Monday morning.
A statement from the Tamaulipas division of Mexico’s security forces said Pulido was rescued shortly before midnight, the Associated Press reported.
The statement added that the 25-year-old star, who plays for the Mexican national team and Greek soccer club Olympiacos, is being medically assessed, but did not provide further details or a motive for the kidnapping.
Pulido was reportedly abducted early Sunday after a party near his hometown, state capital Ciudad Victoria. The region, located close to the U.S. border, has long been plagued by drug-related crime.
