But in a new interview, Ripa says her decision to take the day off was misunderstood. “I think what people need to understand about the entire situation is that I didn’t just not show up,” Ripa told _People_. When she learned the news in a meeting, she says, “I said, in the room, ‘I am going to take the day off.’ I needed to actually sit and gather information. I needed to make sure I said the appropriate things on TV and didn’t just come out and say whatever.” Ripa [returned](http://time.com/4307588/kelly-ripa-return-live-with-kelly-and-michael/) to the show several days later after taking [an anniversary trip](http://time.com/4302813/live-with-kelly-ripa-michael-strahan-departure/) with her husband, and the dust has settled somewhat. But she wants her fans to understand how she felt about learning the news hardly any sooner than the public did. “We’re excited for Michael … I think it is a perfect match, I really do,” she says. “However, what nobody considered is there’s a whole other group of people that it really impacts, because we have to now find another great person \[to co-host\].” She added, “I think that all people are deserving of fair treatment in the work place. People deserve respect. After joking that quote, our long national nightmare is over, she congratulated Stahan on the new gig and thanked fans for welcoming her back. The show of support Through this bizarre time has been really overwhelming. I needed a couple of days to gather my thoughts after 26 years with this company. I earn the right. And let's be honest, I know half of you called in sick to be here, so So we get each other. [ APPLAUSE ] And sorries were also in order for the co- hosts. EW can confirm that ABC's TV group President Ben Sherwood has apologized to both Ripa and Strahan for the way Strahan's promotion to GMA was handled. Ripa had not been back to work since the news broke last week, when she and the show's Executive Producer Michael Gillman were reportedly quote blindsided, when hearing about Strahan's move. According to CNN Money, Sherwood and several other network heads expressed regret for the way the reshuffling was handled, saying quote we had a plan. Obviously did not go as planned.
