Warning: This post contains spoilers from Game of Thrones sixth season.
While Game of Thrones viewers have yet to see anything other than the first few moments of Jon Snow’s return, there is already major speculation over how the character will be changed following his dramatic resurrection. Luckily, Kit Harington — who plays the Lord Commander on the HBO drama — has given some insight into Jon’s new perspective.
“At first, I was worried that he’ll wake up and he’s the same, back to normal — then there’s no point in that death,” Harington told Entertainment Weekly. “He needs to change. There’s a brilliant line when Melisandre asks: ‘What did you see?’ And he says: ‘Nothing, there was nothing at all.’ That cuts right to our deepest fear, that there’s nothing after death. And that’s the most important line in the whole season for me. Jon’s never been afraid of death, and that’s made him a strong and honorable person. He realizes something about his life now: He has to live it, because that’s all there is. He’s been over the line and there’s nothing there. And that changes him. It literally puts the fear of god into him. He’s seen oblivion and that’s got to change somebody in the most fundamental way there is. He doesn’t want to die ever again. But if he does, he doesn’t want to be brought back.”

Harington’s statements are telling for a few different reasons. First, this revelation could mean the end of Jon’s commitment to his Night’s Watch oath — a storyline many have predicted — and the beginning of him following a path of his own choosing. It could also indicate that he will seek to discover his true parentage, possibly confirming the fan-favorite R + L = J theory that Jon is not actually Ned Stark’s bastard, but rather the child of Lyanna Stark (Ned’s sister) and Rhaegar Targaryen.
“Oathbreaker,” the third episode of Game of Thrones‘ sixth season airs Sunday at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
