Since 1996, fans of the Looney Toons/Michael Jordan collaboration Space Jam have had to make do with the movie’s somehow still-kicking website, a time capsule of sorts not just for the film but for the state of the Internet two decades ago. Now, according to reports from the Hollywood Reporter, a sequel is finally in development. LeBron James is set to star, with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin at the helm.
Rumors of a reboot, which have circulated for years, resurfaced last summer, after James signed a deal with Warner Bros., which distributed the original movie. James also received rave reviews for his comedic timing in the Judd Apatow-directed, Amy Schumer-written Trainwreck. In 2014, he responded to casting rumors by saying that they were unfounded, but that he’s “always loved Space Jam. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. If I have the opportunity, it will be great.”
Space Jam earned over $230 million globally, and between James’ massive fanbase and abounding nostalgia for the ’90s—not to mention a new crop of young viewers—a reboot stands to prove similarly successful.
