Federal Authorities discovered a roughly 2,600-ft tunnel running from Tijuana, Mexico to San Diego, Calif., and said its the longest drug tunnel they’ve found across the state’s border with Mexico to date.
An investigation into the tunnel and the house where it ended led authorities to finding 242 pounds of cocaine and 14,000 pounds of marijuana, the Los Angeles Times reports. The confiscation of the drugs suspected of being taken into the U.S. underground was the greatest ever associated with a cross-border tunnel.
The Feds announced the tunnel’s discovery Wednesday, and noted its complex structure. For reference, the passageway was about the length of nine football fields, and was outfitted with ventilation, lights and an elevator on the Mexico side.
The investigators declined to name the organization they believed to be involved with the tunnel.
