Waxman Staff Writer Apr 19, 2016 2:41 PM UTC On _The Late Show_ Monday night, Stephen Colbert [spoofed](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FeNeiWZNZwM) Johnny Depp’s somber demeanor in a public apology to Australians for smuggling pet dogs into the country. After the _Pirates of the Caribbean_ actor and wife Amber Heard made the [video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORpBAIB9j64) for the government’s department of agriculture as part of a plea deal, the country’s deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce [told Channel 7](http://time.com/4298692/barnaby-joyce-johnny-depp-apology-video-australia-dogs-amber-heard/) that the actor could have apologized with more “gusto,” adding that “he looked like he was auditioning for _The Godfather_._”_ So Colbert imagined what Depp would have said if he seemed more passionate about the bio-security laws designed to protect Australians—or a “proud island of exiled British degenerates,” as he called them. ## Transcript [ BLANK_AUDIO ] Australia's a wonderful island with a treasure trove of unique plants, animals, and people. It has to be protected. Australia is free of many pests and diseases that are commonplace around the world. That is why Australia has to have such strong biosecurity laws. And Australians are just as unique, both warm and direct. When you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly. I am truly sorry that Pistol and Boom were not declared. Protecting Australia is important. Declare everything when you enter Australia. ```json [{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"NewsArticle","@id":"https://time.com/4298999/stephen-colbert-amber-heard-apology-australia-late-show/","mainEntityOfPage":{"@type":"WebPage","@id":"https://time.com/4298999/stephen-colbert-amber-heard-apology-australia-late-show/"},"headline":"Watch Stephen Colbert Apologize to Australia for Johnny Depp","datePublished":"2016-04-19T14:41:28.000Z","dateModified":"2026-10-05T08:50:38.943Z","description":"On The Late Show Monday night, Stephen Colbert spoofed Johnny Depp's somber demeanor in a public apology to Australians for smuggling pet dogs into the...","url":"https://time.com/4298999/stephen-colbert-amber-heard-apology-australia-late-show/","keywords":["Newsfeed","celebrities"],"thumbnailUrl":"https://static.time.com/v3/assets/bltea6093859af6183b/blt505fbfdca389454f/69888fa8cf40a88efec42deb/stephen-colbert-johnny-depp-amber-heard-apology-australia.png?branch=production&width=1200&quality=75&auto=webp&crop=1200:675&height=675","author":[{"@type":"Person","name":"Olivia B.
