The number of taxi rides taken in Los Angeles has plummeted by nearly a third and the volume of prearranged taxi rides has fallen 42% since Lyft and Uber started operating in the area, city data shows.
People took nearly 8.5 million taxi rides in 2012, a year before the two services started, but that number dropped to just over 6 million in 2015, the Los Angles Times reports. The drop fits with trends in cities across the world, where the rise of ride-hailing services has hurt business for traditional taxi systems to varying degrees.
The most notable decreases were in rides to and from tourist attractions or nightlife locations, such as Hollywood or downtown.
