Krispy Kreme Challenge Ends With 1 Dead

A man died after attempting to compete in the Krispy Kreme Challenge in North Carolina this weekend, an annual 5-mile race for charity in which participants have to eat a dozen doughnuts midway.

The 58-year-old runner, who has not yet been named, began having chest pains Saturday at the start of the Raleigh race and quit within the first mile, organizers said in a statement. The man, who did not make it to the doughnut-eating portion of the competition, was taken to a hospital where he died.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge, organized by North Carolina State University for its 12th year, raises money for the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital, according to its website.

“On behalf of the entire NC State community, our deepest sympathies go out to the runner’s family members and loved ones,” the school said in a statement.
