The two Democratic presidential contenders met for their first debate without any other candidates on stage.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders debated at the University of New Hampshire in Durham. The moderators were MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and Chuck Todd.

Here is a full transcript of the debate.

## Transcript

[00:00] Almost all new income and wealth is going to the
[00:04] top 1 % not what America is supposed to
[00:08] be about. I believe that we can get back on the right
[00:11] track. I'm fighting for people who cannot
[00:15] wait for those changes and I'm not making promises
[00:18] that I cannot keep. All right The idea that I would
[00:22] dismantle health care in America while we're waiting to
[00:25] pass a Medicare for all is just not accurate.
[00:29] I think we should be talking about what we wanna do
[00:31] for the country, but if we're gonna get into labels, I
[00:34] don't think it was particularly progressive to vote
[00:36] against the Brady Bill five times. [ APPLAUSE ] I don't
[00:38] think it was progressive Progressive to vote to give gun
[00:38] makers and sellers immunity.
[00:43] I went to Wall Street before the crash. I was the one
[00:46] saying, you're gonna wreck the economy because of
[00:50] these shenanigans with mortgages. These guys are so
[00:53] powerful that not one of the executives on
[00:58] Wall Street Has been charged with anything after
[01:02] paying, in this case of Goldman- Sachs, a $ 5 billion
[01:06] fine. Kid gets caught with marijuana, that kid has a
[01:09] police record. Because it was investment banks, it was
[01:12] insurance companies, it was mortgage companies, All
[01:14] of which contributed, so let's not just be narrowly
[01:18] focused on one part of the problem. We have a lot of
[01:21] issues with corporate power that have to be
[01:23] addressed. In my view, the business model of Wall
[01:28] Street is fraud, is fraud. Not only did we
[01:32] have to bail them out once, If we don't start breaking
[01:35] them up, we're gonna have to bail them out again. And
[01:38] I do not wanna see that happen. This was a disaster
[01:41] for our country and we can never let that happen
[01:44] again. We have no disagreement about this. We differ
[01:47] on the war in Iraq which created barbaric
[01:52] organizations like Isis Not only did I vote against
[01:56] that war, I help lead the opposition. Look. We did
[02:00] defer. A vote in 2002 is not a plan to
[02:04] defeat ISIS. We have to look at the threats that we face
[02:07] right now, and we have to be prepared to take them
[02:11] on and defeat them. Here's why I think I will be if
[02:15] nominated the strongest candidate. Democrats win
[02:20] when there is a large voter turnout. When people are
[02:23] excited, when working people, middle class people
[02:26] and young people are prepared to engage in the
[02:29] political process. It's not so much electability, it is who
[02:34] the American people can believe Can
[02:38] keep them safe, can get the economy moving again,
[02:42] can get incomes rising, can build on the progressive
[02:46] accomplishments of President Obama. And I think that
[02:49] the coalition that President Obama put together to win
[02:53] twice. Is a coalition that I can put together and add to.
[02:57] If I'm so fortunate as to be the nominee, first person I
[03:00] will call to talk to about where we go and how we get it
[03:02] done will be Senator Sanders. [ APPLAUSE ] And as
[03:07] I have said many times, sometimes in these campaigns
[03:09] these things get a little bit out of hand. I happen to
[03:12] respect the Secretary very much. I hope it's mutual.
[03:16] And on our worst days I think it is fair
[03:20] to say we are a hundred times better than any
[03:23] Republican candidate for president. [ APPLAUSE ] I
[03:26] hear some talks that people are trying Try and decide,
[03:29] do they vote with their heart? Do they vote with their
[03:30] head? I'm asking you to bring both your heart and your
[03:33] head to vote with you on Tuesday. Because we have a
[03:37] lot of work that can only come because your heart is
[03:40] moved. I do believe we need a political revolution
[03:44] where millions of people stand up and say loudly and
[03:47] clearly That our government belongs to all of us and
[03:51] not just a handful of wealthy campaign contributors.
[03:55] Thank you all. [ APPLAUSE ]
