Amazon is planning to open hundreds of brick-and-mortar bookstores in the country after starting up its first physical shop in Seattle last year, a mall executive says.
The online giant may be adding up to 400 locations, according to Sandeep Mathrani, the chief executive of General Growth Properties, a large mall operator. Mathrani mentioned Amazon’s future growth Tuesday during an earnings call with analysts, the Wall Street Journal reports. “You’ve got Amazon opening brick-and-mortar bookstores and their goal is to open, as I understand, 300 to 400,” Mathrani said.
Amazon opened its first bookstore in November in Seattle’s University Village neighborhood. The company called it a “physical extension of Amazon.com.” Books sold in the store are priced the same as the ones on its website.
