David Bowie’s Family Thanks Fans, Plans ‘Private Ceremony’

1 minute read

David Bowie’s family thanked fans in a statement Thursday for the outpouring of support following the rock superstar’s death, and asked for privacy while arranging a private ceremony.

“We are overwhelmed by and grateful for the love and support shown throughout the world,” said the statement on Bowie’s official Facebook page. Since his death on Sunday, remembrances and tributes have proliferated across the globe. The late musician is also featured on TIME’s front cover this week.

The statement also noted that any memorials or tribute concerts would be welcome, though the family would not officially endorse any of them. “Just as each and every one of us found something unique in David’s music, we welcome everyone’s celebration of his life as they see fit,” the post continued.

Bowie died of cancer on Sunday at the age of 69.
