With only 1.6 seconds left, the squad was down 56-54 as an opposing Northfield player stepped up to the free-throw line. But not all was lost yet. As the ball trickled off the rim after the missed foul shot, Austin player Oman Oman grabbed the rebound and threw a Hail Mary shot the full length of the court. The buzzer-beater swished through the basket, giving the Packers the three-pointer they needed to win the game. “It was just a reaction,” Oman told the [Austin Daily Herald](http://www.austindailyherald.com/2015/12/boys-basketball-oman-hits-game-winning-full-court-shot-for-packers/) after the 57-56 victory. “I just got the ball, and I threw it up. Luckily it went in. It kind of surprised me. I was happy and everyone was charging at me. For Americans to root for the [00:10] underdog. People [00:14] like to see the Davids come out and destroy and beat [00:18] the Goliaths. There were discussions At that [00:22] point to eliminate the automatic bids [00:26] from a lot of the quote unquote smaller conferences. [00:30] There were serious discussions. And just with one [00:31] game all those discussions came to a screeching halt. [00:34] Bobby Winston gets a scream from Mueller. Comes up! [00:34] Fires! We [00:45] were on a roll in the regular season. Yeah. Georgetown [00:49] was dominant that year. They won the regular season [00:52] Big East title. We went to the Big East Tournament and [00:54] rolled away with that. So [00:58] we were feeling invincible. We were feeling like no one [00:59] could beat us. For the Princeton Tigers number 30 will [01:00] be Chris Markhart. You [01:05] know Princeton was, they were a young team I think it [01:07] was a rough year for them. They barely won the [01:10] league. They lost three games in the league and they [01:12] needed to win at Harvard to clinch the spot. [ NOISE ] [01:20] At that point I had achieved my goal, and the team had [01:22] achieved their goal to be in the tournament, and, and [01:26] win the Ivy League, so, so this was, I, I don't wanna say [01:28] gravy. You know, so they're all getting together. There, [01:32] there, watching the selection show all excited.. When [01:35] we found out that we were gonna play Georgetown. [01:38] And they weren't, they weren't that happy about it. [01:42] Hey, Princeton and Georgetown. I'll tell you what, I'm [01:43] supposed to go home for the weekend. If Princeton [01:46] can beat Georgetown, I am going to hitchhike to [01:48] Providence. I am going to change into the Princeton [01:50] cheerleading uniform. I'm going to lead all the cheers. [01:53] Let's go tigers, Let's go Tigers. It will never happen. [01:56] They were Pretty intimidating. [02:00] [ MUSIC ] When you see it and feel it for yourself that [02:04] people are literally scared of you on the floor. Coach [02:06] used to always say, they're not scared of you, they're [02:09] scared of the ghost. And that's the people that came [02:09] before us and put this program on the map. [02:09] Georgetown, That's the ballgame, the National [02:11] Champions. It was definitely more [02:18] than a basketball team, I mean, I think we were a [02:22] cultural symbol. Everybody wanted [02:26] to see the underdog beat the controversial coach. Not [02:30] just Georgetown, but coach Thompson. They wanted [02:32] to see that. Then, I think you can take it a little further [02:34] you know, white against black. You know, people [02:36] wanted to see that. Not saying that there was some [02:39] kinda racial tension but, you know, a lot of people [02:41] thought Coach Thompson was a racist. Which was [02:43] unfortunate because they didn't get a chance to sit [02:45] down and just talk with him, find out who he is and [02:47] what he's all about. I could have given a damn what [02:51] people thought about Georgetown basketball. You [02:52] know, it's what I thought about Georgetown basketball [02:54] that was significant to me. You know, we [02:59] won ball games and Championships and that's what [03:02] we tried to do. East region [03:06] actions continue here from Providence Civic Center in [03:09] Providence, Rhode Island. We are just about set to go. [03:12] Kit Mueller And once the game started, I remember [03:15] my, my first shot I took was blocked by Alonzo [03:17] Mourning. And, you know, was a backdoor cut, and, [03:20] and he blocked it, and I thought, oh, no. You [03:24] know, I don't want this to be the you know, what it's [03:27] gonna be like the, the rest of the game. I knew we [03:29] were gonna get pressed, and we handled our press [03:32] pretty good. We were running our stuff, we were [03:32] getting lay- ups, we get some easy shots, we were [03:36] making some baskets. We was known as a great [03:38] defensive team. Full court and half court. But to play it [03:42] consistently, every possession, at least 30 seconds. [03:44] That could be a wear on. In the half [03:49] court set, right away, Princeton was able to run their [03:52] stuff, and they got few back doors early. The offense [03:54] was working. That's a goal tend with a bucket for [03:56] [ INAUDIBLE ]. It [04:01] all, you know, all of a sudden they're up. You know, [04:03] they, they had this lead. Well I think it has a lot to do [04:04] with styles of play. You expected them to get some [04:04] back doors. You expected them if they got a lead for [04:08] you to be in a position where you had to chase them, [04:12] and to be a little bit more cautious. [04:18] And as it progressed, we realized, we're just playing, [04:21] we're playing basketball. We're playing Georgetown, [04:23] but, we were gaining confidence as the [04:27] game progressed. Absolutely. Your, your Georgetown, [04:28] you're the number one seed. Your, you're losing to [04:31] Princeton. What's going on? And you can see, you could [04:33] kind of tell they were thinking about that. Starting to [04:36] think about it, sounded psychologically like oh wow, [04:37] you know, we in for a war. This [04:45] is why they call it March madness. I guess speechless [04:46] would be the way to describe this here. The only thing [04:47] I can say Dick is that the head of the Princeton cheer [04:49] leading squad just called, wanted to know what sized [04:52] tutu you wear. I can't believe what I'm looking at John! [04:55] This is unbelievable! College basketball. Incredible. [04:58] You know, if this was happening now it would be all [05:01] over. It would break the system. Viral back then is like [05:03] you pick up you're buddies, there's like, you know, [05:05] holy crap, you know, like what's going on? And I mean, [05:06] and, and then, and it wasn't just Princeton people. [05:10] People are aware of this at halftime. You're seeing this [05:12] moment and you just know that like it's, you know, I [05:15] don't believe this. Heading back out there and, [05:19] you know, going through warm- ups and there's [05:21] obviously a buzz in the, in the arena. One of the key [05:24] things is we come out And we score right away, which [05:28] is huge, because it gets the crowd right back into it. I [05:32] thought everything was fine until the first eight calls of [05:36] the second half went against us. Then I said, oh, [05:39] somethin's fishy here. They changed their defense I [05:44] had less opportunities to shoot. We were missing [05:47] shots. Well, we tried to play to our advantages, see I [05:49] mean, just as their advantage was pulling it out, tempo [05:52] and, which they do very well, you know, our advantage [05:56] was Zo. It [06:01] was a very simple strategy, Alonzo Mourning at half [06:02] time was realizing wait a second just give me the ball. [06:06] He deserved to get every ball every time down the [06:11] court. So Mourning hits another big foul shot. 50- 49 [06:15] Princeton down a point. 15 seconds left. I mean and [06:18] this is like, you know when there's a one point [06:21] difference you know this is a do or die shot. [ MUSIC ] [06:24] Scrabis and Mueller Well, that [06:28] was sort of like sort of a pick and roll, which [06:33] you have, well we have the pick but we didn't have the [06:35] roll, Georgetown man to man, They give it to Scrabis, [06:38] So, I know I was gonna get the ball, I get the ball to the [06:41] top of the key, and then you, you know, you always [06:43] want that shot, you know, when your, your backyard or [06:46] on the, on the playground you don't leave the [06:48] playground until you make it, but, you don't [06:52] have, 6'11 future pro's jumping out of the bushes to, [06:56] to block your shot. Bobby Winston, he gets a scream [06:59] from Mueller. Comes up, fires, blocked by Mourning! [07:01] Loose on the floor! Jefferson can't save it. It's out of [07:05] bounds! He made a, he made a great play. You know, [07:07] the ball scrambles around after that, it's kinda chaotic. [07:10] And we get the ball back with one second left. Lap and [07:11] Mueller fires no, the Hoyas escape. And I mean [07:11] escape. And advance to the second round in the [07:11] Eastern regional. Unbelievable. The Princeton TIgers. [07:33] Every time the game comes up, in Princeton circles, [07:38] it's an emphatic, yes, he was fouled. [ LAUGH ] Was it a [07:42] clean block, or was Bobby fouled on the last shot? [07:45] That, you can argue until you're blue in the face. [07:47] Tigers, putting on just a fantastic show here [07:51] tonight. What am I gonna say? Alonzo fouled [07:53] somebody? No, I didn't think he he fouled anybody. I [07:54] thought he made a good block. He's very capable. of [07:54] making a good block. They were a 20 point plus [07:56] underdog coming in here. You [08:02] have all this excitement. You have all this anticipation. [08:04] You have all this transpire. And then, boom, it's [08:08] over. [ MUSIC ] [08:11] It was hard. It was, you know. There's [08:15] a, there's 100 little reasons that you think of. Maybe [08:19] we coulda done 'em. And then a 100 more, which [08:23] had been worse. So you take things the way they are, [08:27] or the way, the way they happen, and that's, that's all. [08:32] That's all you [08:36] can [08:40] do. [08:43] It was a huge loss for Princeton, huge win for college [08:46] basketball. The way that game played out, make the [08:49] world kinda say, oh, maybe we shouldn't get rid of Of [08:52] the quote unquote little guys because they can play, [08:55] too. That's what makes this, this event special [09:00] giving smaller schools the opportunity to do something. [09:03] People saw how big an audience it got, how magical [09:06] and fun it is at the 16- 0 to one, it's like, we've, we [09:10] can't lock any of these Cinderellas out. That would be [09:12] ridiculous. The beauty of the NCAA tournament is, is [09:13] that it's not like the pros, it's not a series, it's on, on [09:14] any given [09:20] night, the starts align themselves properly, a 16 can [09:21] give a 1 a game, a 15 [09:25] can beat a 2.
