Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will announce a policing task force in the wake of protests over the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.
The task force “will review the system of accountability, oversight and training that is currently in place for Chicago’s police officers,” according to a press release reported in the Chicago Tribune. The panel will have four months to recommend changes to the Chicago Police Department.
Protesters have called for the resignation of Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy following the release of a video depicting McDonald being shot 16 times by police officer Jason Van Dyke. Van Dyke was charged with murder and freed after posting a $150,000 bond.
