Video of French Lawmakers Singing National Anthem Makes a Comeback

1 minute read

In January, French lawmakers spontaneously broke into the song La Marseillaise, the French National Anthem, after a moment of silence for the Charlie Hedbo attacks in Paris. People on Facebook and Twitter began sharing the video again on Saturday after six attacks coordinated by ISIS on the city left at least 129 people dead on Friday night.

The latest terrorist attack comes less than a year after three attacks by Islamist extremists in January. Militants swearing fealty to Al-Qaeda murdered 12 people at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hedbo, while an ISIS sympathizer shot a policewoman and killed four hostages at a Kosher market in the Jewish neighborhood of Paris. The French National Assembly, the lower house of the Parliament, met in the days after and together sang La Marseillaise.

It was the first time Parliament had sung the song together since the liberation of France after World War I on November 11, 1918. People from around the world are sharing the old video in support of Paris and those who lost loved ones in Friday’s attacks.
