A crowd of about 70 people, many of them French nationals and French students studying in the U.S., gathered at a vigil in New York City’s Union Square on Friday evening in the wake of the attacks on Paris that day.
The gathering was mostly silent, Gothamist reports, until the group began to sing the French national anthem, “La Marseillaise.” Attendees of the soccer game between France and Germany at Paris’ Stade de France, near where some of Friday’s explosions took place, also sang the song as they evacuated the venue.
