Apple CEO Tim Cook hinted that there could be some truth to rumors that his company is mulling a major foray into the auto industry.
During a presentation at the Wall Street Journal‘s global technology conference, WSJD Live, without getting into specifics Cook told the audience he expects “massive changes” are coming to the car industry given the increased interest in in-car software and automated driving.
“It would seem like there will be massive change in that industry, massive change,” Cook said, according to the Telegraph. “When I look at the automobile, what I see is that software becomes an increasingly important part of the car of the future. You see that autonomous driving becomes much more important.”
Apple has already introduced software that integrates Apple’s iPhone experience into cars, but many think the company will go further. There is a lot of speculation over whether or not Apple will be the next tech giant to develop an autonomous vehicle, following in Google’s footsteps. The Guardian reports company executives recently met with officials in California to discuss their plans, but Cook did not confirm anything during Monday’s speech.
“We’ll see what we do in the future,” he said.
