Hillary Clinton has $33 million saved in her campaign’s war chest, more than any other campaign, as she heads into the most intense season of the primary this fall and early next year.

The nearly $33 million that Clinton has on hand comes after two large fundraising hauls, including $28 million raised in the third quarter of this year. They are funds she will spend on organizing, advertising and outreach in the primary states, and if she wins the Democratic nomination, the general election.

“Thanks to the support of all of our donors, we are on track to hit our goal of $100 million during the primary, which will set us up to reach more voters, organize them, and make Hillary Clinton the Democratic nominee in 2016.” said Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook.

Despite Clinton’s sizable amount of on-hand cash, she is closely challenged by rival Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who has raised huge amounts of grassroots dollars and has $27.1 million in the bank.

Sanders’ haul is a testament to the uncomfortably close nature of the year’s primary contest for the Clinton campaign, as her challenger has had much greater success attracting small donors. Sanders in the third quarter raised $20.2 million in donations under $200, while Clinton raised just $5.2 million from donations under $200, and instead relied on bigger-dollar contributions.

Clinton’s significant savings, however, will give her campaign some breathing room as it heads into tough challenges in February in Iowa and New Hampshire, where Sanders has risen quickly in polls.
