The central joke of the new docu-style sitcom The Muppets is that it purports to go behind the scenes of Up Late With Miss Piggy, a fictional after-dark talk show hosted by the fuzzy diva and staffed by Kermit and the gang. Now the latest teaser from ABC is taking the self-referential humor to the next level by offering a backstage look at the backstage look.
The two-minute clip intercuts sit-down interviews with the Muppets and footage of them in the wild, so to speak.
“You are going to see behind the scenes of the Muppets,” Piggy promises. “The reality, the intensity, the drama!”
Gonzo says there’ll be “cameras on all the time. Everything is unscripted.”
So what can viewers expect from the totally unvarnished (wink-wink, nudge-nudge) footage? Relationship drama, interoffice politics, personal insults, and massive egos, for starters. Muppets — they’re just like us!
The Muppets premieres Sept. 22 on ABC.
