New images of Pluto from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft have arrived, and the photos are eerily beautiful. Pluto appears backlit by the sun, and viewers can see the varied terrain of the planet that looks similar to Arctic scenes on Earth.

Speaking about one of the new photos in the series, New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern told NASA, “This image really makes you feel you are there, at Pluto, surveying the landscape for yourself. But this image is also a scientific bonanza, revealing new details about Pluto’s atmosphere, mountains, glaciers and plains.”
