Scientists Capture Video of Amazing Rare Squid

Images from deep-sea exploration of the waters off Hawaii have exposed the world to the vast array of sea creatures that lurk below the surface.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association scientists spent the summer investigating and recording the waters near and in two marine national monuments in Hawaii that house some of the world’s most mysterious ecosystems.

During a dive in August, a rarely captured squid, known as Walvisteuthis youngorum, was recorded about a half mile below the ocean’s surface. This marked the first time the coral hinted squid has been seen at such a depth; at least two have been collected by explorers.
