Police officers arrested a New York City teacher on Friday for flying a drone into the upper tier of seating at the U.S. Open, after play on Thursday night was suspended so police could investigate the crash.
The teacher, Daniel Varley, 26, faced charges of reckless endangerment, reckless drone operation and flying a drone in a park outside of authorized zoning, the Wall Street Journal reports. There were no spectators in the immediate area of the crash, and no one was hurt, the USTA said in a statement.
Soon after the crash, Varley was located in a nearby park, from which he had controlled the drone. Play between Flavia Pennetta and Monica Niculescu didn’t resume until authorities determined that the device was not a threat.
