Watch Eddie Redmayne Become Lili Elbe in First Trailer for The Danish Girl

1 minute read

Eddie Redmayne thinks Lili Elbe’s thoughts, and dreams her dreams, in the first trailer for Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl.

The film, based on David Ebershoff’s historical novel, tells the story of the real-life Elbe, who was assigned male at birth in 1882 and transitioned to female in the 1920s with the support of her wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikander), becoming one of the first people to undergo gender confirmation surgery.

“When I first read the script, I wept three times,” Hooper (Les Miserables) said in EW’s fall movie preview. “It connected to me in similar ways to The King’s Speech, where a man is locked in his body by a stammer and he’s helped by a tender friendship. With Lili I was moved by the power of love as an agent of transformation, even when the world was against it.”

The Danish Girl opens in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 27, and will expand to additional cities in December. Watch the trailer above, and head here for more on the film.
