Republican presidential candidate Scott Walker said on Sunday that building a wall on the U.S.-Canada border is “a legitimate issue for us to look at,” proposing a focus on the northern border as the members of the GOP primary field tighten their stances on illegal immigration.

The Wisconsin governor, who supports boosting security along the southern border, told [NBC’s “Meet the Press”](http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/scott-walker-politicians-trying-distract-birthright-citizenship-n418416) that focusing on border security would take care of “almost every one of the other issues \[of immigration\] out there,” including [birthright citizenship.](http://time.com/4008888/jeb-bush-anchor-baby-asians/)

“Whether it’s talking about the 14th Amendment or anything else, until we secure the border and enforce the laws, we shouldn’t be talking about any other issue out there,” he said.

Walker added that some voters supporting a norther border wall worry that terrorists could cross from Canada to the U.S. in the wake of [a lone wolf attack on the Ottawa Parliament in October.](http://time.com/3533581/canada-ottawa-shooting-lone-wolf-terrorism/) “\[Voters\] raised some very legitimate concerns, including some law enforcement folks that brought that up to me at one of our town hall meetings about a week and a half ago. So that is a legitimate issue for us to look at.”

## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] Today in Washington, we have a president who thinks we grow the economy by growing Washington. Well, I got news for him. We believe in America that is growing the economy in cities and towns and villages all across this great country. We think that's the way to go forward. [ APPLAUSE ] And we need a leader who understands that when the Prime Minister and leader of our long time ally asks to come to congress to share his concerns about Iran, we should show him and his country our respect. [ MUSIC ] I think arguing about how low wages are is a faulty argument. I'll let the left worry about how low they want people to be.

I wanna have everyone in this country be able to live their piece of the American Dream, get the government out of the way, and help them get the skills they need to support their families going forward. [ MUSIC ]
