The Foo Fighters have Rickrolled the Westboro Baptist Church.

The church, which has a history of protesting LGBT people, Jews, and military servicemen, was picketing at the entrance of the Sprint Center in Kansas City on Friday, where the band was scheduled to perform.

The Foo Fighters responded by driving up to the venue, to wild cheers from fans. Bandleader David Grohl and his band led a clap-along to Rick Astley’s 1987 single, [“Never Gonna Give You Up”](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ) (the term “Rickrolling” refers to hyperlinking a seemingly relevant topic to Astley’s video).

Grohl topped the performance off with a sign that read “Keep It Clean;” bandmate Taylor Hawkins brandished another sign, “You Got Rick Roll’d (Again).”

Watch the entire episode unfold above.

## Transcript

>> I'm Brian Alexander from time. com. I'm--

>> Hi, Brian.

>> Hello. We're at the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl.

>> Hello.

>> Of course, we've got the Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits coming out, and now you're doing Time Magazine's readers' questions.

>> I can't believe it.

>> Okay. We've got a question from Peter [ unk ] in Bristol, England. With the release of the Foo Fighters' Greatest Hits, which would you say is your favorite Foo Fighter song?

>> I have favorite Foo Fighter songs for different reasons like-- a song like Aurora off of the third album, I love-- I love that song because of what it represents to me. It was the first time Taylor and Nate and I really connected in the songwriting process and felt like we had grabbed this thing out of thin air and it was beautiful. But then, all my life, that song-- whenever we played that song live, it doesn't matter if we're playing in a club for 500 people or a stadium of 90, 000 people. When I begin the intro, the dum dum, dum dum dum, dum dum dum, people go [ unk ]. I have the greatest feeling in the world--

>> Yeah.

>> because I feel like I've got this weapon in my hand and I'm just kinda pointing it at everyone.

>> You just unleash it.

>> I like that one.

>> Yeah.

>> It's kinda like the theme from jaws.

>> Right.

>> You just know some [ unk ]. That would work.

>> Yeah. Okay. That's a good answer. Okay. I got a question from Jason [ unk ] in Willowbrook, Illinois. Is the new Greatest Hits album by the Foo Fighters a goodbye or more of a see- you- later?

>> I look at it now like it's, you know, the end of chapter one. But this is the first fifteen years. You know, I never thought we would last more than two albums. The first album was a fluke. It wasn't meant to be a career.

>> Right.

>> It wasn't meant to be a band. I would have called it something else if it was meant to be a band. That was a joke, you know.

>> If you knew this was gonna be a career, what would you have named the band?

>> Gods, something other than Foo Fighters. I swear.

>> Yeah.

>> Do you believe it?

>> That's great.

>> Oh, I don't know. And I called it Foo Fighters because I wanted people-- I didn't want people to know it was me. If they heard it, I wanted them to think it was a band. So I thought, " Okay. Well, maybe if I pluralized it, it'll sound like, you know, the Ramones, a gang, a group of people ." And now, it's just like oh god, fifteen years later.

>> So it sounds like you're saying it's a see- you- later as opposed to chapter one.

>> I think-- I mean, we've also been really bad at taking breaks. We've never been a band that could go away for three or four years. It just-- has never happened. I think we'll be back sooner than people have imagined. I think we'll be back pretty soon.

>> And you could always do those roman numerals, you know, like-- this is one, two.

>> Why not? Yeah.

>> Yeah.

>> Version two.

>> Who do you think is the best new band out there right now?

>> Best new band? I have a lot of favorite bands. Deerhoof are amazing. They're nuts. They'll freak you out.

>> Uh huh.

>> I mean, it's not-- you know-- it's not Lady Gaga.

>> Right.

>> Not like-- They're not gonna take over the world next week.

>> Yeah.

>> I get happy for bands when they get really successful because I remember what it was like when I was 22 when Nirvana became popular. You know, I didn't blow all my money on coke and hookers or whatever. I was just like, " Oh my god. I can get a bigger grill. This is great. Wooh ." So-- But I see young bands get popular, I get really excited for them, you know, because it's such a nice thing to finally get to the point where you can support yourself and your family. When I hear live drums and real guitars and people singing for real on the radio, it makes me feel like there's still hope for this world, that it's not all computers and auto- tuning, stuff like that.

>> You played so many different into your various musical endeavors, which do you enjoy the most and why and any secret talents we don't know about?

>> I love being a drummer. It's such a nice position in a band. Everyone thinks you're dumb. What they don't realize is that if it weren't for you, their band would suck. You know, I've always loved being the drummer. I don't necessarily mean to be the dude out front. I don't-- I never imagined myself for front man. At the same time, I don't mind bringing the party to 85, 000 people, lift up the stage being, you know, being the front man in the band. It's nice to have both, you know. There's that balance between the two. If you ever start feeling like, " Nobody's paying attention to me ," well then you go, you'd be the singer of the Foo Fighters for a while.

And when you're like, " Goddamn, I'm sick of all this [ unk ]", back to being a drummer in the Vultures or whatever.

>> And the second part was any secret talents--

>> Oh, any secret talents. I can tie a chair stem into a knot with my tongue. That's a joke.

>> You [ unk ]. That's a [ unk ]--

>> Were we? Really? No. I don't know. I could juggle. I could cook. What? I could change a diaper in ten seconds.

>> Can you?

>> Sure.

>> As a parent with a teenager who is a drummer--

>> Uh huh.

>> and he's now interested in both Nirvana and the Foo Fighters--

>> Uh huh.

>> I ask you, how did you-- how do you avoid the dark side of rock and roll?

>> I mean, for any kid, I think it's important that you take care of yourself and you realize that some of that [ unk ] is really dangerous, you know. I've seen-- I've seen a lot of my friends die from doing drugs. And you know, I'm not the poster boy for sobriety or-- you know, one of the things that saved me when I first became successful was that I was always really close to my family and my friends, same friends that I've known since I was five years old. When Nirvana became popular, of course, my family and my friends, everyone was really excited. But I could see that you could hit the slippery slope pretty easily.

I saw a lot of people do it. I mean, I saw people around me. I saw people on my own band fall victim to that [ unk ]. But whenever I felt like things were too crazy, I just go back to Virginia, you know, spend time with my family, my friends.

>> But you're gonna be addressing these questions down the line with your own children and--

>> Yeah.

>> What are you gonna tell them?

>> Oh, dude, I have two-- I have two daughters that are gonna grow up with a rock musician as a father here in Los Angeles. Two beautiful girls in the valley, I'm [ unk ], man. [ unk ] luck. I don't know what to do. I'm gonna move.

>> Well, this is appropriate because Jennifer Arnold of Gilbert, Arizona asks, " How has becoming a father changed the way you play or write music ?"

>> Well, now that I have children, I don't like staying out on the road too long. I used to tour nine months out of the year, and I've been on the road since I was about eighteen years old. I'm forty now, and I don't like being away from my kids. I don't like being away from them for more than twelve days. But everything about my life has changed, you know. I don't-- the band is not the most important thing in my life. My kids are my most-- the most important thing in my life for sure. And they're in charge of my career.
