When Alfred Eisenstaedt took a picture of a sailor kissing a nurse in Times Square on V-J Day, on Aug. 14, 1945, he knew he’d captured something special. But he likely didn’t realize that the photo would become one of the most iconic images of the 20th century—and one of its most enduring mysteries. Though the identities of the sailor and nurse have never been confirmed, George Mendonsa, a 92-year-old veteran and retired fisherman, has no doubt the man in the photo is him. “I haven’t found a person yet that I haven’t convinced,” he told CNN, explaining that his large hands, a scar on his brow and his distinct memory of that moment are confirmation enough for him. It captured a moment on VJ [00:11] Day of excitement and jubilence. So many people have [00:15] come forward and said that was me, so we really don't [00:19] know. When I saw that magazine, I looked at it. I said [00:23] damn it that's me. [ BLANK_AUDIO ] [00:28] If you go back, say five months from that day, two **** [00:31] suicide planes crashed in to the deck of the bunker [00:34] hill. All from the flight deck down to the water was [00:38] nothing but a curtain of flame. And we was the only [00:42] ship close to the [ UNKNOWN ]. The guys had jumped [00:46] off the [ UNKNOWN ] the hell we picked up, and some [00:48] of these guys were hurting bad, I mean real bad. And [00:53] we went alongside the [ UNKNOWN ] ship and were [00:56] transferring the wounded over. And those nurses were [00:59] going right to work on these guys. Well that's stuck [01:03] in the back of my head I think the rest of my life. [01:07] [ MUSIC ] [01:11] So we get into Times Square now, and the war ends, [01:15] and I see the nurse. And it was just plain instinct I [01:19] guess, I went and I grabbed her. From [01:23] the offices of the Time and Life building they sent [01:26] Alfred Eisenstaedt and William Shroud. So they just [01:29] came, walked down to Time Square, just a few blocks [01:31] from their office and started shooting. It's clear from [01:34] the interviews that when he shot the one photo that ran [01:37] in the magazine, he knew that was his shot. He had [01:40] followed that sailor down the street. For blocks and he [01:44] was kissing everyone. He saw a flash of white and he [01:48] turned around and got the picture and he shot four [01:50] frames. I haven't found a person yet, that [01:55] I haven't convinced. And the first thing that caught me [01:58] when I looked at the picture was the size of the hands. [02:02] I says, God, that's my hands! And there's the lump [02:05] inside the left arm. There's a scar [02:09] here, that was from a bar room fight. My wife, [02:14] she can be identified in that photo. That's the famous [02:18] picture in Times Square, and there she is. She [02:22] gets annoyed when people kind of try to knock her [02:26] down by saying he did that and [02:30] you're with him?
