Pope Francis’ address to a joint session of Congress will be broadcast live to the public outside the Capitol Building, Speaker of the House John Boehner [announced](http://www.speaker.gov/press-release/announcement-pope-francis-visit-us-capitol) Wednesday. Francis may also appear in person before the crowd.

“The visit of Pope Francis to the U.S. Capitol is a historic moment for the country,” Boehner said in a statement. “We look forward to welcoming Pope Francis and Americans from all walks of life to our Capitol.”

The announcement comes as excitement continues to build for Francis’s September visit. During the trip, his first to the United States since becoming Pope, Francis will visit Washington D.C., Philadelphia and New York City. He will address the United Nations during the annual General Assembly meeting.

Boehner formally invited Francis to speak before Congress last year and the Pope formally accepted the offer in February, according to the statement.
