They are energetic, diverse destinations intent on preserving local heritage, revitalizing undervalued neighborhoods, and they possess distinct personalities that set them apart from other metropolises. Whether it’s the city you’ve called home for years or one you only just stumbled upon during your travels, you know that the best cities are intriguing cultural centers that can’t be replicated anywhere else. Kyoto, in Japan, returned for the second year in a row to the No. 1 spot on our World’s Best list. Readers called it the quintessential Japanese experience, offering visitors everything from history (in the form of spiritual shrines) to notable cuisine (_shojin ryori_) and encounters with the infamous _Geisha_ dancers. Some of the world’s best cities evoke the romanticism of travel, such as Italy’s classic crowd-pleasers, Florence and Rome. Both have appeared on the Top 10 Overall list for ten consecutive years. Perhaps most evident, however, are the cities that appeared on the list despite political and social turmoil. Charleston, South Carolina—the only domestic city on the overall list—has suffered greatly since the polls closed. And Jerusalem, the controversial capital of Israel, is at the crux of an ancient and ongoing conflict. Bangkok was likely bumped from the list in 2012 due to governmental unrest. Because cities are, in many ways, a great convergence of people and ideas, it is inevitable that conflicts will arise. So we keep these cities, and their people, in our thoughts, while we celebrate their resilience and their virtues. This World’s Best debut, known for Gothic fortifications and a laid-back, blasé attitude, has enchanted travelers with something akin to magic, and overcome even stalwart favorites like Istanbul and New York City. Perhaps it’s the marvels of the Old City, like Rynek Glówny—the largest Medieval square in Europe—and the Royal Castle of Wawel that have captivated intrepid travelers seeking something unfamiliar out of their explorations abroad. In the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, where synagogues that survived WWII still stand, there’s a notably bohemian vibe taking hold in new hip spots like Bar Propaganda, appropriately outfitted with a bust of Lenin. Some, however, will tell you it’s the mystic _chakhra_ stone of Wawel Hill that has, like a love spell, bewitched the world. ### No. 6 Bangkok, Thailand  iStockphoto Score: 88.907 After a year of unrest, Bangkok has been restored to the World’s Best list, where it clung to the No. 1 spot from 2010 to 2013\. Bustle may be an understatement here, where sweet and spicy street food perfumes the avenues and gilded Buddhist temples stand in dramatic juxtaposition to slick skyscrapers. It’s frenetic, colorful, and a curious amalgamation of past and present: tuk-tuks and monks clad in saffron-hued robes fill the streets at dawn, their reflections cast in the steel and glass high-rises. At night, head to Sukhumvit Soi 38 for an equally vibrant street-side feast, where pedestrians elbow up to tables for fat rice noodles, mango sticky rice, and _pathong ko_ (Thai doughnuts) with pandan leaf custard. It’s impossible to tire of the capital city’s storied landmarks, such as The Pantheon and The Colosseum, both relics of the Roman Empire. Tour St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel in the sovereign Vatican, or stroll leisurely along the 2,300-year-old cobblestones that make up Appian Way. When you’ve had your fill of the old, explore the new breed of design-forward buildings that have risen in brilliant contrast to the original masterworks. Now, you can enjoy creamy _gelato_ in the shadows of Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI Museum, or next to starchitect Richard Meier’s glass-and-travertine frame for the Ara Pacis. Most _T+L_ readers agree that one trip simply is not enough. “There will never be sufficient time to see all there is in Rome,” one said. But if you fancy fairytales (of which there are many in this intrinsically romantic city), toss a coin into the Baroque white marble Trevi Fountain to ensure a return visit. ### No. 4 Florence, Italy  David Kukin Score: 89.429 This Italian city is a perfect example of a destination that is constantly reinventing itself and offering even veteran visitors variation and excitement. Known for being a Renaissance repository with such highlights as Michelangelo’s _David_ and red-roofed buildings reflected in the river Arno, Florence is livelier than ever. New art galleries, like EX3 and Museo Novecento, feature contemporary works, and _aperitivo_ time at the local bars entices sightseers with _salumi_ and rustic _crostini_. The quaint, pedestrian-friendly streets are prime for admiring (or buying) handcrafted leather goods and the classical architecture. Still, the city is a monument to its monuments, and the magnificent Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore (known simply as Il Duomo), with features dating back to the 7th century, remains the most recognizable feature of the Florentine skyline. But this is hardly a perished city. RIght, someone who wants something a little bit [00:39] more exotic. We actually recommend South Africa. So [00:41] this is a beautiful destination. Go right to Cape Town, [00:45] this is a fantastic city right on the water, it's known for [00:48] it's incredible shopping, it's night life, Its food and its [00:51] wine, and one of the best hotels in town is the Cape [00:54] Cadogan. So this is a cool boutique hotel right in the [00:58] Gardens District which is a really buzzy, fun area. You [01:01] walk right outside the doors and you're on Bree Street [01:05] which is where all the cool galleries and shops are. So, [01:08] again, this is a great value. It's about $ 170 a night. So [01:12] under $ 200. I mean, you can't beat that. What about [01:14] Europe? We know that the Euro and the dollar have [01:18] kind of never been closer in recent memory. What are [01:21] some great rich cultural destinations in Europe that [01:24] won't cost you too much. Well one city you should [01:27] consider is Berlin. So Berlin is actually more on the. On [01:29] the affordable side anyway. And really, you go there [01:33] because you it has an incredibly rich history, but also [01:35] it's sort- of known as the cool, young hip city, and one [01:39] hotel that we'd really recommend is the 25 Hours [01:42] Hotel Bikini Berlin, and we really love this spot [01:46] because locals are coming here, too. So, they go to the [01:49] top of the floor because it has a great restaurant, Neni. [01:51] [ MUSIC ] Which serves Mediterranean food. And then [01:54] they also have the Monkey Bar. And it gets its name. [01:56] Because actually, the hotel faces out onto the Berlin [01:59] Zoo. So you can actually see monkeys playing, which is [02:02] pretty cool. And are there any destinations, you know, [02:05] within Berlin, that would give you a cultural experience? [02:08] Checkpoint Charlie. So this is the division between what [02:11] was once East and West Berlin. Also, the Brandenburg [02:14] gate, it's an iconic site. Another thing that we [02:17] recommend, go to the luxury department store [02:19] KaDeWe, so the top two floors, it's sort of like a [02:22] glamorous grocery store. What about someone who is [02:25] looking for more of a European vibe, but has only a [02:28] long weekend or a similarly low budget? Right, so why [02:31] not consider Canada, our neighbor to the north? It has [02:34] that French flair and you can stay at the Auberge de [02:37] Vieux- Port, so this is set in 19th century warehouses [02:40] right along the river, it's a 27 room, and they have cool [02:45] details like wrought iron beds, stone walls, it's full of [02:49] charm, full of character, and also again, under $ 200 a [02:52] night. Are there any places you'd check out for great [02:54] food or nightlife? So actually a really fun bar that we [02:58] recommend is called Big in Japan. So this is actually [03:01] located in the hip plateau neighborhood, and locals [03:03] like to come in and sit at the maze- like bar, and then [03:06] in terms of dining, there's a new restaurant called [03:09] [ UNKNOWN ] [ MUSIC ] And this is an Italian / Asian [03:11] mash- up, and it's from some popular restauranteurs [03:14] based in Montreal and this is on the western edge of [03:17] old Montreal which is a neighborhood that in general [03:20] just [ UNKNOWN ] youthful vibe.
