“I’m saddened by the news of Mary Ellen’s passing,” film director and author Tim Burton told TIME after the celebrated documentary photographer and portraitist Mary Ellen Mark died on Monday.
Mark worked as a still photographer on seven of Burton’s movies, including Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and Alice in Wonderland.
“She had a beautiful and creative spirit that shone through into her photography,” said Burton. “We collaborated on seven films and while I was deeply inspired by her unique artistry, I came to appreciate her even more as a person. She will be missed.”
Mark died after a long fight with cancer.
