CNN Journalists Arrested For Trying to Sneak Into World Trade Center

2 minute read

Two CNN journalists were arrested on Tuesday for trying to sneak past security at the World Trade Center in New York City, police said, in what they said was an attempt to report on recent security lapses at the site.

Yon Pomrenze, 35, and Connor Fieldman Boals, 26, first tried to talk their way in through the main gate to the center in lower Manhattan, Reuters reports. When that didn’t work, Boals tried to climb over the perimeter fence, according to the police account. Then, the two men attempted to make their way through an electronic gate about a block away when police arrested them.

One was holding a video camera, the other had a camera strapped to his head, Reuters reports.

While the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which controls the site, has spent millions of dollars on security measures there, another high-profile security breach was revealed recently. In September, three men base jumped from the top of One World Trade Center; they turned themselves in this week. Their death-defying leap from the tallest building in the western hemisphere was recorded on video. One of the men, ironworker Jim Brady, talked with TIME about the stunt.

Barbara Levin, a CNN spokeswoman, told Reuters the two producers were on assignment but “were not asked to sneak onto the WTC site.”
